Are you looking for the perfect DJ for your wedding? It’s important to ask the right questions when interviewing potential DJs to ensure that you find the best fit for your special day. Here are 8 key questions couples should ask DJs when interviewing them for their wedding:
1. What experience do you have in the wedding industry?
This will give you an indication of how much experience the DJ has in dealing with weddings and the type of music they can provide.
Kibar’s answer: I’ve been a professional wedding DJ since 2004 and have averaged 50-60 weddings per year. I started off DJ’ing for smaller celebrations such as backyard weddings, milestone anniversary parties, and milestone birthday parties. This forced me to quickly learn all genres of music for all ages in order to accommodate all audiences. I have quickly evolved into a well-known wedding DJ and am proud of the reviews you can find about me online. Would love to chat more!
2. Do you have a portfolio of previous wedding events?
It’s always a good idea to check out the previous work of your potential DJ. Ask to see photos and videos of previous weddings they have DJ’d, and listen to their music to get a better idea of their style and sound.
Kibar’s answer: Absolutely! Check out the links page to see for yourself!
3. Do you have references from other couples?
It’s always a good idea to get a few references from other couples who have used the DJ before. This will give you a good idea of what to expect from the DJ on your wedding day.
Kibar’s answer: Indeed! But rather than provide you with a list of vetted references that I have full control over, I’ll invite you to search for my name on The Knot or Wedding Wire and see what people write about me in a space that I cannot control.
4. What type of equipment do you use?
This will give you an idea of the quality of sound and equipment the DJ will be using for your wedding.
Kibar’s answer: We could be here for a while. I pull a 10-foot trailer behind my truck to every event I DJ. I have almost 4 full DJ systems with me at all times in order to accommodate the various surprises I may get at a venue. Such examples include having different setups and locations for the ceremony, cocktail hour, dinner, and dancing. The specific equipment I use includes the latest QSC audio system, the Rane 12/72 turntable system, and Ape Labs lighting. You can see examples by clicking here.
5. Are you willing to work with our wedding planner or coordinator?
It’s important to make sure that the DJ is comfortable working with your wedding planner or coordinator. This will ensure that the DJ and the wedding planner are on the same page when it comes to executing the plan for your wedding day.
Kibar’s answer: Absolutely! in fact, I have several wedding planners that I recommend if you need one, and am always looking to grow my network. I look forward to working with your full wedding vendor team to ensure you have an amazing and stress-free celebration!
6. Do you have any special packages or discounts for weddings?
You may be able to get a lower rate or discounts on packages if you’re booking a DJ for your wedding. Ask your potential DJs if they have any special packages or discounts available.
Kibar’s answer: I’m not the biggest fan of the word discount as I feel this could lower the quality expectation of the product or service. We at Main Event Entertainment are priced well in the New England market and offer many services that will bring value to your celebration. The package that may interest many couples is my DJ and Piano package. Happy to chat more about what that looks like.
7. What is your policy on music requests?
Some DJs are open to music requests from guests, while others are not. Make sure to ask this question so you know what to expect when it comes to music requests at your wedding.
Kibar’s answer: I have no problem with song requests from you or your guests. I like to tailor the experience to you and your guests as this is the primary way to keep people on the dance floor. I do, however, have a competition with myself to see how I can get as few song requests as possible. This simply means I’m already playing what everyone likes!
8. Do you have insurance?
It’s always a good idea to check if the DJ has insurance. This will ensure that you are covered in the event of any mishaps during the wedding.
Kibar’s answer: Yes, I have comprehensive liability insurance that allows me to perform in any venue. I’m also able to provide a custom COI for any venue upon request.
